Q & A Tuesday! Questions: Once I start the 5-year period which must pass after I make gifts in order for me to get Medicaid to pay for my nursing home, what happens if I make additional gifts? Answer: For each gift, you start another 5-year period within which Medicaid will not pay for your nursing home. Later gifts do not affect the 5-year periods for your earlier gifts, but Medicaid will count all gifts within the 5 years before you can qualify for Medicaid to pay nursing home expenses. This should be discussed with a qualified Elderlaw attorney. -Attorney Jack N. Alpern
