If my spouse goes into a nursing home, are the assets owned by me alone at risk to be used up to pay for his care? Unfortunately, yes. Ohio does not look only to the nursing home patient’s assets to pay for care. Assets owned by both are considered to be “available resources” to pay for the institutionalized spouse’s care, with few exceptions. All of that can be avoided by planning while you are healthy.
