Are my IRAs protected against the costs of nursing homes? No, your IRAs are considered available resources, which means they MUST be spent to pay for your nursing home costs. Also, remember that every dollar that you take out of your IRA to pay those costs will trigger income taxes. There are ways to protect your IRAs from those costs.
