Will making gifts disqualify me from getting Medicaid to pay for my nursing home costs? Yes!! Any uncompensated transfer within 5 years of applying for Medicaid could cause you to be denied Medicaid benefits. Those transfers may be done by mistake: putting a child’s name on your deed, bank account or investments can be called a gift by Medicaid. Another problem: even gifts to charities can disqualify you if made within that 5-year “look-back period”. It is best to consult with an experienced ElderLaw attorney before making gifts.
