How often should I review the beneficiaries of my life insurance policies and retirement plans? This should be done at least every other year. Often times, these are the largest assets which are left to your heirs, and if the beneficiary you named is not alive when you die, the benefits could end up going through probate. As for retirement plan benefits, those could also suffer greater income taxes if they go through probate. A regular review of your beneficiary designations is essential.
